Mathematics at Ngunnawal Primary School
Learning mathematics creates opportunities for and enriches the lives of all Australians. The Australian Curriculum: Mathematics provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge in number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. It develops the numeracy capabilities that all students need in their personal, work and civic life, and provides the fundamentals on which mathematical specialties and professional applications of mathematics are built (ACARA).
The mathematics goals for every student at Ngunnawal Primary School are:

Common Lesson Structure
- Mental Mathematics 5- 10 minutes
- Lesson Introduction 5-10 minutes
- Body of lesson 30 minutes
- Reflection 10-15 minutes
Differentiation looks like
- Use of asking open-ended questions
- Teach the same concepts & ideas to students at different developmental levels at the same time
- Parallel tasks
At NPS teachers:
- Instil a love for problem solving and mathematics
- Provide ‘purpose’ to apply mathematical concepts (lifelong skill)
- Ensure students engage in mathematics learning on a daily basis
- Plan for 3 number and 2 strand lessons per week
- Use the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model
- Use a common planner (NPS curriculum plan)
